They recognised the need for an international day to draw global attention to the sanitation crisis \u2013 and so they established World Toilet Day on 19th November.\u00a0WTD\u00a0has continued to garner support over the years, with\u00a0NGOs, the private sector, civil society organisations and the international community joining in to mark the global day, and it\u00a0continues to promote global discourse and debate on toilets and sanitation.<\/p>\n<p>World Toilet Day is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>THE<\/strong><\/span> day for action. It is the day to raise awareness about all the people who do not have access to a toilet, and the urgent need to end the sanitation crisis. And it is the day to stand up (or sit down or squat if you prefer) to do something about it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.btaloos.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/worldtoilet.org_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1510 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.btaloos.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/worldtoilet.org_-300x65.jpg\" alt=\"worldtoilet.org\" width=\"300\" height=\"65\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.btaloos.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/worldtoilet.org_-300x65.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.btaloos.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/worldtoilet.org_.jpg 355w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Do We Need A Day For Toilets?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The \u2018silent\u2019 sanitation crisis is a ticking time bomb which affects billions of people around the world.<\/p>\n<p>When the World Toilet Organization was founded in 2001, the subject of sanitation received little media attention and it was severely neglected on the global development agenda. \u00a0Sanitation has become more of a priority for world leaders in the 14 years since the <a href=\"http:\/\/worldtoilet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Toilet Organization<\/a>\u00a0was founded, however the current level of prioritization is still far from what is needed, given the scale and impact of the sanitation crisis.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>It\u2019s time for toilets to be treated as an urgent global priority.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s So Urgent?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/water_sanitation_health\/monitoring\/jmp-2015-update\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">1 in 3 people on this planet<\/a> <\/strong>still don\u2019t have access to a clean and safe toilet.<\/li>\n<li>\u2013 1,000 children die each day due to poor sanitation.<\/li>\n<li>\u2013 And better sanitation supports better nutrition and improved health, especially for women and children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can\u2019t wait while a lack of access to sanitation affects health, education, gender equality, nutrition, the environment and the economy! And in the words of WTO founder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jackwto\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Sim<\/a>, \u201cWhat we don\u2019t discuss, we can\u2019t improve.\u201d We need to continue to address the taboo nature of toilets and shine a spotlight on sanitation each World Toilet Day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Impact\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>World Toilet Day is celebrated globally by NGOs, UN agencies, the private sector, civil society organisations and the international community. In 2013, a joint initiative between the Government of Singapore and the World Toilet Organization led to Singapore\u2019s first UN resolution, entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/worldtoilet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WecantWait1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Sanitation for All\u201d,<\/a> calling for collective action to address the global sanitation crisis through the commemoration of World Toilet Day. The resolution was co-sponsored and adopted by 122 countries at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. On July 24, 2013, World Toilet Day on 19 November became an official UN day.\u00a0Each year\u00a0WTD\u00a0calls on the global community to do more to address the sanitation crisis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Raise a Stink for UN World Toilet Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sustainable sanitation is a matter of dignity, equality, and safety, and is crucial to improving the health and wellbeing of one-third of humanity.
